John the Baptist ‘prepared the way’ for Jesus by preaching repentance, righteousness and the Kingdom of God, and he and his followers were known for their fasting (Luke 5:33). Followers of Jesus fast for many reasons, including longing for the Bridegroom to come (Mark 2:19-20), and to move in greater spiritual authority (Matthew 17:21).
